Made out of miriti (Mauritia flexuosa L.) stalk, the Abaetetuba toys are artistic manifestations of the Amazon man. Known as “Círio (a catholic ceremony) toys”, they are sold every October in the Belém streets, at the Nossa Senhora de Nazaré festivities. The making of the miriti toys begins with the reaping of the stalks (arms) of the palm tree, in the midst of the forest, in Sirituba, a place you can only reach by boat. The chosen miriti is preferably young and people reap only the foliage, so that there is no predatory activity, since the tree is kept alive.
