The Alagoan city of Boca da Mata started a tradition originated in the work of Manoel da Marinheira, an artist who sculpts on raw trunks real and imaginary animals: lions, tigers, leopards, giraffes, buffalos, camels, rhinoceros and seals. Among his most characteristic creations are the impressive bicephalic benches. Manoel was “discovered” by the entrepreneur Jorge Tenório, who started collecting his works in the end of the Sixties. Manoel’s offspring and in-laws joined his artistic efforts, maintaining the same style of the old master, giving life to a significant workshop of engravers in this region.
